SteelSeries Rival 700 Review – Worth Buying in 2020?

SteelSeries Rival 700 also pronounced as Rival 700 only is a gaming mouse that aims to be a customizable mouse. It is designed in a way that it is gripped perfectly while gaming. It is a modular mouse with reactive OLED display that gives some serious edge to the gaming experience.

It has a signature sensor that handles the pinpoint – a much-needed feature for PC gaming.

SteelSeries is producing a series of computer mice that are very nice in terms of customization. However, many of them had dull and irksome designs. For instance, Rival 100 and Rival 300 didn’t go well with shape. SteelSeries in its latest iteration made some considerable improvements in design which should be praised.

Before looking at the interesting design of this gaming mouse, let’s do some quick specs details.

Buttons 7
CPI/IPS 16000 CPI/300 IPS.
Grip Style Palm/ Claw/ Finger Tip.
Weight 4.8 ounces
Sensor Technology Optical and Laser Sensors
Unique Features OLED Display, Tactile Alerts, Modular Components.
Swappable Cable Yes
Dimension 4.9 x 2.7 x 1.6 inches

And that’s all for specification details.

SteelSeries Rival 700 Design:

A little unboxing first that won’t take your time. A stiff hard box with a mouse that is put inside in a great way. Other than that we also have a smaller box which holds two cables of different lengths. The mouse is black in color – a color most of us usually like to have. It has two lighting regions; one along the scroll wheel while the other one at the bottom. The scroll wheel is also black. Finally, we have a rubber layer having a company name at the bottom which is removable.

The body of the mouse is made of plastic to make it as lightweight as possible. Right where you put your palm, we have SteelSeries logo in RGB lighting which looks really fantastic.

You should know that this plastic shell is replaceable. Next thing you are going to find is obviously the right and left clicks which give a very smooth touch. A company named them as reinforced switches. Additionally, it is claimed that this mouse can go through 30 million clicks which is quite unbelievable in my opinion. But let’s just assume it is true.

Just below the scroll wheel, we have DPI Button (DPI stands for dots per inch) whose function is to change the speed of the pointer. Well, it has no frequent use and it is placed oddly on the top where you might press it without intention.

Both the left and right sides feature the same buttons. Additionally, there are OLEDs (resolution 128 x 36) which aren’t very good at display but still okay. These LEDs are customizable and can be personalized as per your own will. Good news is that all of these buttons can be assigned functions, therefore creating a seven-button setup.

Bottom of the mouse also has USB slot for cable which is detachable. This one is a good improvement as mouse comes packed with two cables of different lengths. Short cable 3.2 ft. long while the large one is 6.5 ft. I recommend using the short cable for gamers because long one often becomes a hurdle in moving mouse aggressively.

SteelSeries Rival 700 Gaming Mouse Features:

I am using this mouse for about a month and till now it didn’t disappoint me. I have been using it for playing some big names such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike: GO and Minecraft. You see, the mouse has a rubber (Teflon) layer which gives a strong grip to mouse holder. Gamers use mice aggressively and SteelSeries knows that. That’s why they have placed Teflon to get rid of sweat that is very annoying especially while playing Gears of War 4.

I was playing Casual 😛 just to take a screenshot… lol

This mouse is light in weight and doesn’t hinder your smooth gameplay. Bottom of the mouse features an optical sensor area which is replaceable. I have replaced it with a PixArt 9800 laser sensor because it employs laser technology for surface tracking. Thanks to this laser technology, I can use my mouse on almost any surface. However, you are going to pay some extra bucks for this replacement.

I have used the word “customization” many times already but let me explain to you what does it really mean. You can personalize mouse for creating custom profiles, personalizing the lightings assigning commands to buttons on left and right.

However, you need a software for all these functions and that is SteelSeries Engine 3. If you have other devices of SteelSeries, they can also be customized with the same software. However, there is a limit and most of you aren’t going to like it. Only three games can be customized, all being the big names: Dota 2, Counter-Strike: GO and Minecraft.

SteelSeries Rival 700

Well, these are some of the most prominent features of Rival 700. But still, there are few things on which the company needs to pay some attention. This mouse is designed for right-hand gamers. Lefties may find it offensive but that is the truth. Other than that, personalization is limited to only some big titles. SteelSeries is really leaving a vast variety of games that are equally famous as these titles.

So in terms of performance, there aren’t many competitors that can beat this one. But the sad fact is that it is an expensive mouse. Well, gaming isn’t cheap as well but brands are striving to produce budgeted devices. But I still recommend it for its quality and performance which is unmatchable till now.
